Give the Gift of Music
Give the Gift of Music
We envision a world in which the classical music profession reflects the racial and ethnic diversity of our communities.
Challenging times make us stronger as a community and we can all agree that the first half of 2020 has been rough. Not only is the world at the mercy of a pandemic, our communities continue to call for change and justice for our Black and Brown sisters and brothers. Inequities within the world of classical music were the very reason Project STEP began its work in 1982 in collaboration with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston University, and New England Conservatory. For nearly four decades, we have provided our students with a creative and safe environment so that their music and voices can be heard. Project STEP stands with our community through all of these challenges. We are a haven for creative expression during a pandemic and a platform to fight injustice. Our students and the music they create will change our future for the better.
Through participation in high-quality, comprehensive classical string training, Project STEP students develop the tools they need to succeed not only in their musical aspirations, but also in their lives. Our program teaches fundamental skills including problem solving, collaboration, and critical thinking, and STEP’s dedication to our mission reaches beyond our students, making sure their families are an integral part of the program. For nearly four decades 100% of Project STEP graduates have gone on to college or conservatory and approximately 60% of students go into the music profession.
Even as the COVID-19 pandemic has threatened our students, disrupted their normal in-person music training, and altered our scheduling, Project STEP has maintained uninterrupted programs (moving quickly to a fully-online format) and has offered deep support for students and their families. The generosity of our supporters make this possible by maintaining their own commitment to our students – especially in this time of great need. Our administrative and programming staff has been working remotely in collaboration with our teaching artists to ensure that our students have access to a multitude of online resources including virtual private lessons, theory classes, streaming recital-workshops, and more. With your support there is nothing these student musicians cannot accomplish.
